A-G’s Report: Ministers should be held accountable, says Dr M

KUALA LUMPUR: Ministers should be held accountable for what happens in their ministries, in light of the revelations in the Auditor-General’s report, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

“In Japan, when a plane crashes on the runway, the minister of transport has to resign. In Malaysia, if the plane crashes, that is not my business.

“I hope to see more resignations, I resigned because I failed,” he quipped during a press conference after visiting MMC Gamuda’s Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit underground and tunneling works in Cheras here Thursday.

He also said the A-G’s office should be strengthened so it could constantly monitor department.

“I think there should be a team from the A-G’s office to follow to see if corrections are being made or not,” he said.

He said identifying the mistakes and then hoping that people would correct them was not going far enough.

“In Malaysia, it does not work. You need to be all the time standing behind them, looking over their shoulder with a whip,” he said.
