Local varsities in global list

EIGHT of Malaysia’s universities have been named among the global top 200 in at least one of the 30 disciplines covered in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Universiti Sains Malaysia performed the best out of the country’s universities and was the only Malaysian university to make it to the top 50, ranking 28th in environmental sciences.

The university also ranks within the top 100 in computer science and information systems, chemical engineering, civil engineering and mechanical engineering.

Universiti Malaya makes the top 100 in six of the 30 disciplines including modern languages, computer science and information systems, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and education.

QS produces the annual QS World University Rankings and since 2011, has extended its scope to include the evaluation of 30 individual disciplines.

QS head of research Ben Sowter says the subjects ranking aims to highlight excellence at discipline level and therefore includes specialist institutions that are active only in one study area and may also teach at one level only (be it only postgraduate or undergraduate).

The rankings are based on research citations, alongside reputational surveys of over 90,000 academics and graduate employers worldwide.

“Overall, the performance of Malaysian institutions has improved compared to last year.

“Two other institutions, Universiti Teknologi Petronas and Multimedia University were also included this year,” he adds.
