Giving HMs power to fire ‘only a proposal’

PETALING JAYA:  Giving authority to school heads to sack teachers is only a proposal for high performance schools.

Deputy Education Minister Dr Puad Zarkashi, in clarifying reports that this would be enforced in all 10,000 schools in the country, said the proposal was to allow the heads in such schools to maintain excellence.

At the tabling of Budget 2010 recently, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the Government would identify 20 schools and classify them as high performance schools.

These schools, he added, would further focus on their students’ overall achievements and their existing academic strengths while the level of discipline, cleanliness, extra-curricular activities and their competency in certain fields would also get special attention.

Sarawak Teachers Union president William Ghani Bina urged the ministry to carefully consider the proposal.

“There are already procedures in place for teachers who may have committed offences,” he said.

These, he added, included transfers, salary adjustments and demotions in serious cases.
