NUTP Proposes Accident Insurance Coverage For Teachers

KEMAMAN, Feb 22 (Bernama) — The National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) today proposed to the education ministry that a study be carried out to provide an accident insurance coverage for teachers.

Secretary-general Lok Yim Pheng hoped that NUTP would be called to discuss the matter.

She said the matter was raised following the death of a teacher during the floods in Kampung Geliga Che Akob here on Dec 24, last year.

The teacher from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Geliga, Norhayati Sulong, 37, was killed when the lifeboat she was in capsized while returning home to ensure the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) answer sheets which were kept at her house were safe.

Her husband also drowned in the incident.

Lok said the ministry must provide insurance coverage for those teachers who were vulnerable to accidents, particularly during extra-curricular activities.

Earlier, she presented a cheque for RM6,000 as financial assistance to the couple’s six children.

Lok hoped the ministry would recognise Norhayati’s sense of dedication and sacrifice made in the line of duty.
