KUALA LUMPUR: The number of new Covid-19 cases jumped to 78 today.

The Health Ministry (MOH) said 63 people have recovered and were permitted to leave he hospital.

Its director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the total number of Covid-19 positive cases is 7,137 while the number of active infectious cases is 1,163.

“Out of the 78 new cases today, 25 were contracted abroad, while of the 53 local transmissions, 40 are non-Malaysians where 25 cases were detected at the Immigration Department’s custody depot in Bukit Jalil.

“One new Covid-19 fatality was reported to the Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre here today, bringing the cumulative death toll in the country to 115.

“The decease was a 65-year-old male Malaysian who has a chronic health background such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney problem.

“The deceased was warded at the Sungai Buloh Hospital on April 3 and was pronounced dead at about 2.58pm yesterday,” he said.

Dr Hisham also reminded the public to take social responsibility seriously when celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri by adhering to the existing standard operating procedures.

He said the people must practice good hygiene when preparing their Hari Raya delicacies to avoid food poisoning.

The MOH had lined up five suggestions to ensure good food hygiene:

1. Wash hands with soap before preparing meals.

2. Use fresh raw ingredients and clean water.

3. Segregate kitchen items such as specified chopping boards for processed and raw foods.

4. Cook the food perfectly and consume it within four hours.

5. Store food at appropriate temperature for not more than three days.
