Buffet meal food must be handled by servers, says Ismail Sabri

PUTRAJAYA: Restaurants offering buffet meals are reminded to have servers scoop the food onto customers’ plates instead of allowing them to handle the food themselves.

Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (pic) said this requirement was part of the standard operating procedure (SOP) for restaurants, hotel cafes and canteens.

He said the special Cabinet committee observed that many restaurants and cafes providing buffet services failed to ensure that servers handle the food.

He warned that failure to observe this could land operators in trouble under Act 342 or the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act.

“Getting the restaurant staff to serve the food will ensure that only one person touches the ladles.

“Allowing customers to take the food themselves will result in the ladles being handled by many people, and this is not good if we want to prevent the spread of Covid-19, ” he said on Thursday (July 16).

Alternatively, said Ismail Sabri, disposable plastic gloves can be provided for guests to use when they go to the buffet counter.

“We hope these outlets take note of this and ensure this SoP is followed if they don’t want to get in trouble with the law,” he said.
