Historical Development of UNITAR International University:

It started with the establishment of Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNIRAZAK) was mooted by Datuk Hassan Harun, the former chairman of KUB Malaysia Berhad. This was guided by his strong interest and vast experience in the field of education, especially with the setting up of Maktab Adabi in 1969.

Universiti Tun Abdul Razak PINTAR Campus is home to the university undergraduate’s faculties and various schools. It was officially launched on December 21st, 1998 by YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd. Najib Tun Abdul Razak, our current prime minister who was then the Minister of Education. The number of students currently stands close to 8,000 students; with approximately 5,000 full time students, while others are of distance – learning at the campus.

Major Milestones:

18 December 1997:  The Ministry of Education invites KUB Malaysia Berhad to set up Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR).

September 1998:  Inaugural intake of 162 students.

21 December 1998:  Official launch by YB Dato Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, Minister of Education.

February 1999:  Received establishment letter from the Ministry of Education.

28 January 2000 : Received approval for registration from the Ministry of Education.

18 August 2001: Hold its inaugural Convocation and Chancellor’s Proclamation Ceremony at Hotel Istana, Kuala Lumpur. Y. Bhg. Tun Hajjah Mohd Noah was proclaimed the first Chancellor and 28 graduates received their scrolls.

10 September 2001: Received MSC – Status recognition.

22 June 2002: Received the MSC – Status from YAB Dato’ Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohammed, Prime Minister of Malaysia.

8 August 2003: The first few private learning institutions in Malaysia to receive its ISO 9001:2000 Quality System Certification from SIRIM.

11 October 2003: Holds its third convocation and Pro Chancellor’s Proclamation Ceremony at Dewan Perdana FELDA. YBhg. Tan Sri Dato (Dr.) Ahmad Sarji Bin Abdul Hamid was proclaimed as the first Pro Chancellor and 239 graduates received their scrolls during the ceremony.

1 Mac 2007: UNITAR was acquired by Tun Abdul Razak Education Foundation (Yayasan PINTAR) from KUB Malaysia Berhad.

22 November 2008: Hold it’s Eighth Convocation and Pro Chancellors’ Proclamation Ceremony at Putrajaya International Convention Centre(PICC). YBhg. Datuk Seri Panglima Andrew Sheng Len Tao was proclaimed as the Second Pro Chancellor and 1682 graduates received their scrolls during the ceremony.

1 September 2010: Relocation of UNITAR PINTAR Campus from Kelana Jaya to Leisure Commerce Square.

11 March 2011: Wins Bronze Award in the Putra Brand Awards (Education and Learning), Malaysia largest consumer-based awards.

4 July 2011: The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) approved the renaming of UNITAR Pintar Campus to University of Management and Technology (UMTECH).

22 October 2011: Eleventh Convocation at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC), where 2,149 graduates received their scrolls.

21 May 2012: Ekuiti Nasional Berhad (Equinas) invested up to 90% stake in Unitar Capital Sdn Bhd, the owner and operator of University of Management and Technology (UMTECH) together with private equity firm Shoraka Square Ltd (Shoraaka) and other investors.

13 August 2012: The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) approved the renaming of University of Management and Technology (UMTECH) to UNITAR International University.

18 October 2012 : The Official Launching of UNITAR International University by YB Dato’ Seri Mohamad Khaled Nordin at Putrajaya Marriott Hotel.

UNITAR International University Profile:

UNITAR International University is dedicated to addressing the global human capital needs in the 21st century. The university  will be offering foundation, diploma, bachelor, masters’, and doctoral programmes in diverse disciplines including business administration, accounting, management, education, early childhood education, guidance and counseling, information technology, software engineering, tourism and hospitality.

SIDMA College – UNITAR International University Sabah Regional Centre:

SIDMA College City Campus, Kota Kinabalu is UNITAR International University Sabah Regional Centre. Its 47,000 sq feet campus in Bundusan Commercial Centre is only 7 minutes from Donggongon Town (Penampang); and about 15 minutes’ drive from Kota Kinabalu City; with close proximity to food outlets, banks, budget hotels, books, and stationery shops, supermarket and the vast residential housing area with easily available hostel accommodation for students.

The campus with contemporary design, houses basic facilities such as resource centre, a surau (prayer room), computer lab., fitness gym, childcare centre, a “Madrasah” (an Islamic Religious school), university stationery and photocopying shop, lecture halls, tutorial rooms, counseling room, a multipurpose student lounge (atrium) with WIFI access, and spacious underground parking.

Under the leadership of its charismatic Chief Executive Officer, Adjunct Prof. Dr. Morni Hj Kambrie, his dynamic team of managers and trusted Board of Directors, the college prospers jubilantly over the years and rapidly emerged as one of the largest UNITAR international University regional centre in East Malaysia, running UNITAR International University programmes, its home grown academic programmes and also Academic Collaboration Agreement programmes with CUCMS.

Adjunct Prof. Dr. Mornie Hj Kambrie, CEO SIDMA College, UNITAR International University, Sabah Regional Centre, Kota Kinabalu.

During its first establishment in Kota Kinabalu, the college leased a two storey Prudential Building of approximately 15,000 sq. feet and had its first batch of 34 students in 2003. Gradually progressing, the college is currently (2011), having about 2,500 active and registered students.

A total of 319 UNITAR International University Sabah graduates received their scrolls during the recent 11th Convocation held at Putrajaya International Convention Centre on 22 October 2011.

During the convocation, graduate Wong Yisha from UNITAR International University Sabah was selected to receive two special awards: namely (a) Best Student – Faculty of Hospitality and (b) Best Student – Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management.
